The Darwin earned its name. It's the planter that took the success of the tall rectangulars before it — the Brisbane, the Perth — and pushed the proportions to where the form really wanted to go. One hundred and seven centimetres tall. Sixty-one centimetres deep. Lengths from just under a metre up to nearly two. The result is the rectangular planter that finally does what designers had been working around: it replaces a hedge, replaces a partition wall, replaces a custom-built green screen — with a single specifiable object you can order, deliver and install in a morning.
It earns its place because the proportions actually work. The 107 cm height clears the sightline of someone seated and stops just below the gaze of someone standing — which is exactly where privacy is needed in almost every hospitality, residential and commercial context. The 61 cm depth gives genuine soil volume — enough for mature shrubs to keep their form, for small specimen trees to anchor a composition, for hedging that doesn't thin out within a year. Plant a run of three Darwins end to end and the result reads not as planters but as a section of garden lifted onto a terrace.
This is the planter for projects that need real landscape but can't have real ground. The flat roof of an office building, where every kilogram counts but the brief calls for a planted boundary. The terrace of a penthouse where the neighbours are too close and the view is too important. The outdoor seating of a hotel restaurant defending its territory from the pavement traffic. The boundary of a rooftop pool that has to feel intimate without giving up the sky. In each case, the Darwin does the work that traditional landscape construction can't — same green presence, none of the structural load, none of the construction permits, none of the disruption. The four lengths (91.4 / 121.9 / 152.4 / 182.9 cm) compose into any total length, with a matching corner piece for clean right-angle turns.
Every Darwin is hand-finished in the same automotive-grade composite fiberglass as the rest of the Jay Scotts collection. It endures from −20 °C to +50 °C without cracking or fading, and stays light enough that a rooftop installation rarely requires structural reinforcement — the detail that, at this scale, decides whether the project is feasible at all. Available in four lengths with a matching corner piece, in all 21 standard Jay Scotts finishes, with custom colour matching on request.
