Fiberglass planters — the essentials. The product Do you offer a guarantee? Yes. Jay Scotts planters include a three-year manufacturer’s warranty from the date of delivery. The warranty applies to the original purchaser and covers defects in materials and workmanship. Issues resulting from misuse, improper installation, unauthorized modification, neglect, or failure to follow planting instructions are not covered. Proper drainage is essential, especially in freezing climates. Labor, shipping, and additional project costs are not covered. How long will a fiberglass planter last? With proper care, a Jay Scotts fiberglass planter offers many years of reliable performance. The durable materials used in marine and automotive applications ensure exceptional longevity. Do fiberglass planters withstand extreme hot or cold climates? Yes. Jay Scotts planters are engineered to perform in both high-heat and freezing conditions without cracking. Do I need to empty the planter during winter? It is generally not necessary. The materials accommodate natural temperature expansion. However, sufficient drainage is essential to prevent standing water during freeze–thaw cycles. Will the color fade? The automotive-grade, UV-resistant coating maintains its appearance for years. Gentle cleaning and optional waxing can further extend its beauty. Do the planters come with drainage holes? Yes. Jay Scotts planters are suitable for direct planting. Can I plant directly into a fiberglass planter? Yes. Jay Scotts planters are suitable for direct planting. Which plants work best in my planter? Consider light conditions, watering needs, placement (indoors or outdoors), and root behavior. Always use lightweight potting soil. Avoid plants with aggressive roots. Consult your plant supplier for best results. Can fiberglass scratch? The finish may scratch similarly to automotive or marine surfaces. Handle with care during installation to protect the finish How can scratches be repaired? Light scratches can be smoothed with very fine sandpaper. Deeper marks may be corrected using touch-up paint Will the planter bulge? Not under proper use. Use lightweight potting soil only — not topsoil, sand, or rocks. Do I need drainage holes for outdoor use? Typically yes, to allow water to drain properly. Indoors, drainage holes are generally not needed. How do I drill drainage holes? Use a 25 mm spade bit for large planters or a 13 mm bit for smaller ones. The material drills easily. Can you drill the holes for me? When should I request it? Yes. Drainage holes can be added at the time of ordering and will be noted on your order confirmation. Planters with modifications cannot be returned. What type of soil should I use? Use lightweight potting soil only. Do not use regular soil, sand, or rocks, as these may damage the planter.
Keeping your planters in perfect condition. Care & maintenance How much maintenance do fiberglass planters need? Very little. Fiberglass is non-porous, frost- and weather-resistant, and does not rot or react to temperature changes. An occasional clean — roughly every few months — keeps planters looking new all year. How do I clean a Jay Scotts planter? Dust the surface first with a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush. Then wipe (indoors) or spray and rinse (outdoors) using a mild solution of water with a little vinegar, or a mild soap. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft towel to avoid water spots. A garden hose works well for larger outdoor planters What should I avoid when cleaning? Harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, steel wool and stiff brushes — they can dull or scratch the finish. Never use a pressure washer; the force can damage the coating and tip taller planters. Do I need to wax the planters? Waxing is optional. On outdoor planters, a coat of marine-grade wax every six months adds gloss and protection and helps restore the finish to factory condition. Indoor planters generally don’t need it. How do I keep the finish looking new? Clean off dust and spills promptly and inspect the surface after each cleaning. Address stains and mineral deposits early — the longer they sit, the harder they are to remove. Periodic waxing on outdoor pieces helps maintain the luster. Do the planters need any special care in winter? No. With adequate drainage, Jay Scotts planters withstand frost, snow and freeze–thaw cycles without cracking, and sun, rain and cold do not affect the finish. No seasonal treatment is required — just occasional cleaning. Indoors, an occasional dusting is all that’s needed. Should planters sit directly on grass or soil? No — use the planter’s feet or a stand. Direct contact with grass or soil can cause the base to sink after watering, reduce drainage, and discolor the bottom. A level, stable base also prevents tipping once the planter is filled. How do I repair a deeper scratch or chip? Light surface scratches smooth out with very fine sandpaper. Deeper scratches and chips can be filled with epoxy, sanded level, and finished with colour-matched touch-up paint (automotive- or marine-grade). Touch-up paint is available for our finishes.
Getting the best from your planting setup. Planting & drainage What soil should I use? Lightweight potting soil only. Never use topsoil, garden soil, sand or rocks — these are heavy, hold too much water, and over time can stress or damage the planter. Refresh the potting soil seasonally to keep it porous and nutrient-rich. Can I plant directly into a fiberglass planter? Yes. Jay Scotts planters are suitable for direct planting. Many specifiers prefer a removable liner or grow-pot for easier seasonal plant changes — both approaches work well. Do the planters come with drainage holes? They are supplied without pre-drilled holes so they suit both indoor and outdoor use. Drainage holes can be added at the factory on request — this is noted on your Sales Order Confirmation — or drilled on site. Do I need drainage holes? Outdoors, yes. Holes let excess rainwater escape and are essential in freezing climates to prevent standing water during freeze–thaw cycles. Indoors, holes are usually not needed — plant in a liner or water carefully instead. How do I drill drainage holes myself? The material drills easily with a standard drill — no special tools required. Use roughly a 25 mm bit for large planters and a 13 mm bit for smaller ones, and drill slowly and steadily for a clean hole. Please note: planters with drainage holes or other modifications cannot be returned. Which plants work best? Consider light conditions, watering needs, indoor or outdoor placement, and root behaviour. Avoid aggressive-rooted species that can outgrow the container and push against the walls. Your plant supplier can advise on the right soil, light and watering for a given species. Will the planter bulge if I overfill it? Not under normal use. Bulging comes from heavy fill materials (topsoil, sand, rocks) or oversized root systems. Stick to lightweight potting soil and an appropriately sized planter and the walls keep their shape. Any tips for very large or tall planters? Position them on level, stable ground, on their feet. Allow room for the root ball of larger trees, and place big planters before filling — they’re far easier to move empty.
How orders work from enquiry to delivery. Ordering & delivery Who can order from Jay Scotts Europe? We supply trade and wholesale partners only — resellers, landscapers, architects, interior designers, hospitality groups, nurseries and garden centres, and property managers. Wholesale pricing is visible once your trade account is approved. How do I place an order? Once your trade account is approved, request a quote or order through your consultant. An order becomes binding on payment, after which we issue a Sales Order Confirmation listing models, colours, quantities, billing and shipping addresses, and any drainage-hole requests. Please review it carefully and report any correction in writing immediately. What are the payment terms? Orders are paid in full in advance; we do not offer credit terms. We accept bank transfer, advance payment, credit card and PayPal. For full-container (20 ft+) or project-based orders, custom payment terms can be arranged — contact marta.pusztai@jayscotts-europe.com. What are the order types and lead times? We support three ordering pathways: EU stock — ships from our Hungarian warehouse, typically 7–10 business days within Europe by standard service (3–5 business days by express, surcharge applies). Backorder — items not currently in EU stock; the estimated arrival into the EU warehouse is shown on your confirmation, after which orders typically ship within 7–21 days. Made-to-order (factory) — for larger volumes, custom colours or custom moulds; lead time depends on production and freight schedules. How are the planters shipped? Smaller orders ship by parcel carrier with tracking. Oversized and bulk orders ship palletised by freight; these are kerbside deliveries and may require a forklift or tail-lift at the destination. For large planters we arrange pallet/groupage freight rather than express, which is more practical and economical for bulky items. Which Incoterm do you use, and who carries the risk in transit? We deliver DAP (Delivered At Place) to your agreed European delivery address. Under DAP, Jay Scotts Europe arranges and pays for carriage and bears the risk while the goods are in transit; risk passes to you when the planters are placed at your disposal at the destination, ready for unloading. Unloading at your site is your responsibility. What should I do if a delivery arrives damaged? Inspect every shipment on arrival — boxes and pallets, packaging, and planter surfaces. If you see damage, note it on the delivery document and/or refuse the shipment. Report any damage to us in writing within 5 days, with photos of the products, packaging and cartons/pallets. We recommend filming the unboxing. Without documentation at delivery we may be unable to assist with a claim. Can I change or cancel an order? Changes to quantity, colour or model must be requested within 24 hours of payment; after that, preparation or production may have begun and changes cannot be guaranteed. After 24 hours, orders are final. As a B2B supplier, no consumer right of withdrawal applies. Can I order custom colours or custom shapes? Yes. We offer 21 standard finishes. Custom colours require a minimum of 20 units per model per colour, and custom moulds carry a tooling fee. Custom-colour and custom-mould charges are non-refundable. Do you deliver outside the EU? We ship across Europe. For non-EU destinations (for example Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Norway), local import duties and taxes apply and are the customer’s responsibility. What is your return policy? As a B2B supplier, returns are accepted only where required for a warranty claim. Custom planters and any planter with drainage holes are non-refundable. Where a return is agreed in writing, handling or restocking fees may apply.
Everything about our trade program. Trade accounts Do you sell to the public? No. Jay Scotts Europe is strictly B2B — we supply trade and wholesale partners only. This keeps pricing and project support focused entirely on professionals. Who qualifies for a trade account? Resellers, landscapers, landscape architects, architects, interior designers, interiorscapers, hospitality groups, nurseries and garden centres, property managers and condo associations. If you run a related business, apply and we’ll review it. How do I open an account, and how long does approval take? Register on our trade application form with your company details and EU VAT number. Approval usually takes 1–2 business days. Once approved, you can see wholesale pricing and place orders. What do I need to register? Your company name and website, contact details, industry, and your VAT / EU VAT number. Depending on your country and company type, we may request a little supporting documentation. How does trade pricing work? Pricing is tiered and transparent: your level reflects your partner type and volume and applies across every form, size and finish. Trade prices are shown once you’re logged in, and your consultant can prepare a project-specific quote. How is VAT handled? For partners with a valid EU VAT number, intra-Community supplies are invoiced at 0% VAT (intra-Community supply under Article 138 of Directive 2006/112/EC), subject to VIES verification and shipping documentation. Customers outside the EU (for example Switzerland, the UK and Norway) are invoiced under local rules and pay any import duties and taxes themselves. What support do partners receive? A dedicated consultant from quote to delivery, product and specification guidance, design files, stock and backorder timelines, freight coordination and project planning — a named contact, not a call centre. Are there minimum orders? Standard catalogue items have no special minimum beyond normal order processing. Custom colours require 20 units per model per colour, and full-container or project orders can be arranged with custom terms. Can I see the planters in person? Yes. Our showroom is at MaxCity Home Design Center, Tópark utca 1a, Törökbálint (Budapest area). Trade partners are welcome to view finishes and sizes in person — please get in touch to arrange a visit.
